It's a BOOK!!

With the way of the world heading all digital, I have to ask, how long do you think it will take before there are no longer printed books available? I still love the way a printed book feels in my hands. There is nothing like turning the pages and getting lost in the worlds writers provide for us.

So with that being said, I can't ignore the other side of the coin. I can download books to the app on my phone and take them where ever I go. The time of day doesn't matter because the screen lights up, allowing me to be transported to another reality. Also the real truth is I'm also a gadget geek. I LOVE gadgets. They are fun to play with.

Does this mean that one day our grandchildren will be asking what we are holding when we pick up an old favorite from our shelves? Will print ever really be gone or will it become more of a collector's item like so many other things that time has forgotten?

An article published by Smarthouse states, " eBooks Could Cost More Than Print If Publishers Get Their Way" If this is true, then there might be a possibility that print media won't go silent into the night. It won't disappear completely.

To me, this isn't a bad thing. I do want to know what this means for writers. Is big business making it impossible for writers to be paid and why aren't writers paid more? After all, we are the reason those companies are in business as it is.

Digital books cost less to produce transport and store, and these savings may not have been passed on to readers. Mass-market paperbacks are usually sold at the same price in paper or e-ink. And yet a $7.99 ebook will generate a profit of around $3.80 for a publisher, under the agency model. The margin shrinks to $2.25 for the physical version.

If this is true then why are writers who land on the best seller lists still making an average of 20 to 50 thousand dollars a year? Why are the profits not going to writers when we are the creators and when we no longer have a budget for PR given to us to market our work to make more sales?

Whether or not print leaves this planet and becomes nothing more than an old piece of nostalgia sold at auctions or not, is really not the heart of the whole issue.  It's a book and between the pages rests invisible blood from each stories creator. We don't write to get rich, we write and create because we love to. Big business is in trouble though and people are starting to feel the crunch. Small publishing companies, like World Castle Publishing,  are taking risks on projects that are less likely to be considered by bigger companies because they think outside the box. The risks are starting to pay off in dividends and many unknown writers are starting to build their own following.

Self published writers are taking the time to hire good freelance editors and cover artists to help put out good quality work. Others are starting their own publishing companies with the help of places like Smashwords, Createspace and other sources. These are also biting into big business and allowing the newer writers to have a chance. Yes, the work is twice as hard. However, if you have a product like my friends Mike Saxton, Elizabeth Kolodziej or Beth Muscat, then you are really getting a good story and being entertained.

Really, what makes a good book? It's the ability to tell a story that draws the reader in. It isn't big or small business. Its the hard work that has been put into each and every word. It's a book...more than a book....it's a world you can carry around no matter what delivery system you choose to use.

The Kiss Book 2 for I AM WOLF

The following is a little taste of The Kiss. It is currently in the rewrite phase. Please enjoy this little snippet while I try to break the bones and make it bleed...lol.

PART 1

Moon Tribe

‘Through dragon’s fire made of ice, I change. I close my eyes to hear the stars whisper in my ear, though nothing is revealed. Torn between a past I don’t understand and a present I can’t escape. A kiss filled with hells fire burns within me. Hear me oh children of the night. The time of the moon children has arrived. We are the chosen ones. I would rather dance with the devil than be betrayed again. I wait for you my shadow man—the entity of my dreams. You are the soul that touches me. I await your arrival. The past is gone the present soon to dawn and now I see the fabrics woven in the tapestries. It is a kiss I wait to give you. A kiss of freedom—a kiss from yesterday—a kiss that shreds the past and carries us unto the future. A kiss.’
Cleo stood in front of a cave where a single white thorn bush grew. The area was unfamiliar to her at first. A sense of de ja vous filtered through her, sending shivers through her soul. The cave felt ominous. Like the very heart of it was evil, and yet Cleo couldn’t help want to step into it. She knew the path to take. A single step was all it would take to carry her into the arms of the one she knew was there—waiting for her. He had always been waiting for her. She knew that now more than ever. The past was gone. Her shame washed away. The ancestors would soon be restored and her love would hold her in his arms. Cleo knew this with all her heart.
The alarm clock went off, dragging her away from the cave where he waited. The first word out of her mouth was no. Always with in her grasp of understanding but never quite all the way there, she sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes.

I am Shakya clan, the modern myth come to life. I carry the flames of justice and see through the darkness of night. I am the guardian and the seeker. I am lion and my roar makes even the wolves shake.

I Am Wolf

A little taste of I Am Wolf. The first chapter of this book has been written over several times because I couldn't figure out exactly how I wanted the book to begin. I decided to start with a teaser about Cara. I do hope you enjoy and more news is coming about the release. As it stands right now I'm knee deep in rewrites and edits.

“Did you know fireflies come from the wings of angels who choose to walk among us? They are from the fallen. That's why fireflies only glow when a person is being blessed or when they are around a soul that is here for a purpose. To the angels, the fates or God or whoever, feel forever may not be long enough to make things right with the world we live in and so they choose to be as real as you and I. They choose to be seen. My mom told me that just before she died,” Cara said to the miniature giraffe walking next to her just before she popped up in her bed surrounded by all she knew and loved. Fear struck her in the center of her being, causing her heart to pound against her chest. It beckoned her to rush to her mom's room. Cara crept out of bed, opened her door and tip toed as fast as she could. She paused just as she passed the mirror hanging in the hallway. Not because she had just seen her reflection, but because she had seen a glimpse of her wonderland in it. With that, she ran the rest of the way towards Jeanne's room.
A soft ray of light filtered through the window, dancing across Jeanne's face causing her to glow like an angel. Cara inhaled a deep breathe of relief. Her heart slowed down to normal but still, she didn't feel quite safe. Leaning in, Cara kissed her mom in the cheek, just enough to wake her.
Hey doodlebug, what's wrong?” Jeanne asked in a tired voice.
Nothing, I just had a bad dream.”
Well, you can climb in with me.”
She held up the plush comforter, allowing Cara to climb in. Cara relished the warm cocoon of safety she felt in her mom's arms. She rolled over and fell back to sleep, disappearing into her own wonderland. Safe.
